How I Celebrated My Baby’s First Diwali

Last year I gave birth to my precious baby boy and just within a few days I would be celebrating his first Diwali. For every parent, their child’s firsts are those moments that are to be captured and remembered forever. Even though 2020 has dampened our grand plans but our level of excitement remains the same and I am more than excited to make this a special occasion for my child.

But with grand plans and excitement in place, I have also been preparing about how to make sure that it turns out a comfortable one for my baby too.

Here are a few important pointers that every mother can use:

DRESS YOUR BABY COMFORTABLY

Like every new parent, I love dressing up my baby for every little occasion that I get. We all know how adorable little babies look in ethnic clothes and we wouldn’t want to give up on any opportunity to see them in a lehenga or sherwani, don’t we? But all said, please make sure that the dresses aren’t itchy because of the sequin work or the kind of material that is used for their pretty clothes. Choose something that is breathable, easy on their tender and dewy skin and loose enough to make them feel comfortable so that it doesn’t limit their movement.

PROTECT THEM FROM LOUD NOISES

The festival of lights isn’t complete without some firecracker, is it? But we all understand that a baby’s ears are quite sensitive to the loud noises being produced by the firecrackers and prolonged exposure to the noises can cause a problem in the long term. Also, a baby might get scared with sudden noises around. Thus it is imperative that as parents that you make sure that you take adequate measures to protect your children from loud noises. First, you may start by opting for noiseless firecrackers. Also, while you and your family is bursting crackers outside, you may want to keep the baby inside a room. You may also try a ‘safe room’ at home where you can close the windows and door in case it gets too loud outside.

With all the noise around, the baby might get cranky. With everything to be managed, you can try to make the baby stick to his nap routine. You might also try this by adding a white noise machine to his room to make it easier for him to fall asleep.

AVOID THE SWEET INTAKE

If your baby hasn’t been introduced to solid foods you might want to make sure that relatives don’t feed him sweets during the festival. And if he has taken to solid foods try to limit the intake of sweets and let him just nibble on a little something as too much sugar can upset his stomach.

USE SAFE AND ECO-FRIENDLY DECORATION

With everyone moving towards sustainable celebrations, with your baby around, you might want to move away towards safe decoration options as well. You must make sure that your baby stays away from electric lamps and diyas. For decorations, you can look at including paper lanterns, flowers and lamps made of thread and twine.

KEEP YOUR HOME POLLUTION FREE

While burning crackers is an important part of our Diwali celebrations, it is also one of the biggest contributors towards the pollution in the country. But now with a child in the house, you would need to keep that in mind to take all the precautions to maintain a good quality of air even inside the home. The smoke produced by the firecrackers is harmful to babies and adults alike. Last year many people complained about having various respiratory problems. Thus it is quintessential for you to make sure that you use an air purifier to keep the inside of the home filled with clean air.

CAPTURE THE MEMORIES

And now for the most important part of the festivities – capture the beautiful moments with your baby on his/her first Diwali.

With all these checks in place, I am sure you and I would be able to create a healthy and fun environment for your baby and you to enjoy this first Diwali of many to come full of enthusiasm yet safely.

If you have any other measures that us young mothers should take, write away in the comments!
